John Monaco is a storyteller and artist based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. He explores the nuances of daily life and the human condition using the city, along with his own community in Arlington, Virginia as a 6th-generation native, as his subjects.

He aspires to capture the moments he wasn't old enough to photograph as a child, but left a lasting imprint on his identity. Getting his haircut in the same barbershop as his great-grandfather and hearing stories of life during Jim Crow from his 105-year-old great-grandmother.

Ultimately, his images seek to foster respect, humility, and understanding by wading into the discomfort and vulnerability. As he continues his artistic journey as a college freshman, he will continue to capture images that’ll help us better understand the human condition.
